Leopard : Add custom menu shortcuts – no app needed!

Tweeking around, I found out that you can create shortcuts of any menu command.
Just by adding the name of the menu command in the Keyboard & Mouse preferences!

The only thing to be careful is to enter exactly the name of the command (spelling, spaces…).
If you do it right, you should see your shortcut appear in the menu like the above image.

Here you can see under ‘All Applications’

• ‘Remove Line Endings’ is in the /Services/ menu
• ‘Save as PDF…’ is in the Print dialog window
• ‘Offline -Local’ is my network location setting to go off line, it’s in the /Location/ menu
• No need to logout or anything, just wait a sec.

For incase, here’s a step by step explanation:

1. Open ‘System Preferences…’
2. Clic on Keyboard & Mouse
3. Clic on the + button near the bottom – A dialog box will slide down
4. If your menu command is system wide and you want to access it from everywhere, choose ‘All Applications’. If not select the application in which the menu appears.
5. Enter the name of the menu command and the shortcut like this:

Clic the Add button

Et voilà !

In the preference windows, the new shortcuts will be automatically grouped by application at the bottom of the list.

So in the title, I mean: no need to install an application.
Did this existe in Tiger ? Panther ? If so, it’s only now that I find out.

Mac : Better way to open .sit files

Browsing MacUpdate, I see that Stuffit Expander is listed in the weekly popular downloads…
So that must mean that most users don’t know that there are other options… (.sit files have always been the problem. They are everywhere. That’s why we have to look elsewhere. BTW, why doesn’t Mac handle it by default? )

I know busy people who don’t bother about their computer just download Suffit Expander by habit. These people are very busy and don’t have time to look around.
